Apparently I've been so swept up in Twilight mania, holiday shopping, and Thanksgiving prep that I completely forgot about the National Book Awards that were doled out for the 59th year last Wednesday. Back in October I talked about the nominees for the National Book Award (all 20 of them) and how excited I was about the nominees for Young People's Literature. At that point I'd only read The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart. Guess how many of the nominated titles I've read since then? If you guessed zero you get an extra slice of my pumpkin pie.
I fully intend to read all the nominees for Young People's Literature, but maybe after I read the winners first. The winners all received a bronze sculpture and $10,000.
The winners are:
Nonfiction: The Hemingses of Monticello by Annette Gordon-Reed.
Fiction: Shadow Country by Peter Matthiessen
Poetry: Fire to Fire by Mark Doty
Young People's Literature: What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell
For all of you holiday shoppers out there, these four titles (and the nominees) make easy gifts. Going to Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow? Stop by your favorite independent bookstore and pick up your hostess (or host) a gift.
