Gamers, mark your calendars! Take a break from your holiday shopping because tomorrow (November 15th) hundreds of libraries across the United States will celebrate the popularity, educational and recreational value of video and board games during the first-ever National Gaming Day @ your library sponsored by the American Library Association. The goals of this national event is to expose people to a new type of board game, raise awareness of about the use of games in library programs, and establish connections between local board game groups and the library. Gaming at the library allows patrons of all ages interact with each other and share their expertise as well as learn knew skills.
During National Game Day public, academic, and school libraries will participate in two national events. The first event will try to establish a record for the number of people playing the board game "Pictureka" on the same day. The second event will be a national video game tournament via the web. Players of all ages and skill levels will be able to see how they rank locally and nationally.
In addition to video games and board games, libraries will also offer roleplaying games like Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast donated games to the participating libraries.
Gaming in libraries has increased in popularity in recent years. ALA even offers a gaming symposium to librarians to demonstrate the benefit of gaming in libraries. The last ALA TechSource Gaming, Learning, and Libraries Symposium was held November 2-4th, 2008 in Oak Brook, Illinois.
Both Seattle Public Library and King County Library System offer monthly gaming programs at many of their library branches.
