I love Powell's Books.  I consider it the Promised Land.  It's become tradition for me to go on a pilgrimage to this mecca for booklovers at least once a year.  Portland is just a quick three hour drive down I-5 (I say quick because I'm not the one behind the wheel.  I'm asleep in the passenger seat).  As much as I love used bookstores, I can't justify a six hour round trip for shopping, so I usually only have a chance to visit Powell's when visiting friends in Portland or passing through on my way to the Oregon Coast.

I was fortunate to be able to spend several hours there on Sunday and got a head start on my holiday shopping.  I can lose myself in the stacks.  I love that the aisles are always full of shoppers and browsers.  My heart always warms when I see kids and teens carrying stacks of books around.  Powell's makes it easy to browse, especially anything that's won an award as they shelve books by award (Oregon Book Awards, Printz, Newberry, ect).  They have a ton of staff recommendation displays which tend to be my favorite.  I like that I'm able to buy both new and used titles, even if it means I have to flip over every book I want to find a price that meets my needs.  Some of their discounts are up to 80% off.

My only gripe with Powell's is that I never have enough time or money to spend there.
