Scandiuzzi Children's Book Award (Children's Category): "Rabbit's Gift" by George Shannon and illustrated by Laura Dronzek
Scandiuzzi Children's Book Award (Young Adult Category): "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie
I'll be honest with you. I've only lived in Seattle for a few months and until this week I didn't even know there was a Washington State Book Award, so I have read exactly one of these winning books. Can you guess which title?
If you guessed Alexie's "Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" you win. It should come as no surprise that Alexie won the Washington State Book Award for his semi-autobiographical novel considering he won the National Book Award for this title last year. It's a phenomenally good story about a budding cartoonist growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Though it is marketed for Young Adults, I would recommend this book to everyone including my grandmother. It's beautifully written and the illustrations are by Seattle author and artist Ellen Forney.
