Michelle over at the Book Examiner has a great piece about pairing booze with books. If you think about it, authors and alcohol are pretty much a match made in heaven.
The book "Secret Lives of Great Authors: What Your Teachers Never Told You About Famous Novelists, Poets, and Playwrights" by Robert Schnakenberg and Mario Zucca is chock full of stories about authors who loved to drink (or had odd jobs or crazy habits). Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Carson McCullers, and F.Scott Fitzgerald all had a weakness for alcohol. Charles Bukowski, a legendary drunk, even has a couple of bars in Boston called Bukowski's Tavern that pay homage to the author. Patrons can join the "Dead Authors Club" by paying a small fee and drinking all 99 beers out of a mug engraved with their favorite author's name.
In Seattle we have a few literary watering holes of our own. Downtown there is the Library Bistro and Bookstore Bar that serves microbrews and sells books.
There is also Third Place Books located in Ravenna and Lake Forest Way. The new and used bookstore has a pub with a Happy Hour that would make any author proud (all drafts $3.25).
If books and beer are such a natural combination, why aren't there more bars dedicated to the marriage of the two? Do you have a favorite bookstore bar? Have I missed any in the Metro Seattle area? If so, please leave the information in the comment section below.
