On Monday, June 8th police charged Travis and Jermaine Johnson as juveniles for the burning of a pit bull in Baltimore. They have been charged with animal abuse and cruelty.
The pit bull was found covered in flames on May 27th by a police officer. The fire was extinguished and the dog was taken to the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS). From there she was transferred to a veterinary hospital to be treated for burns on over 98% of her body. Unfortunately the dog, nicknamed Phoenix by caregivers, could not cope with the extensive injuries and was euthanized after her kidneys began to fail.
According to the BARCS website, over 26,000 dollars have been raised as a reward for information leading to a successful conviction of those involved in this crime. Individual donations have totaled 12,500 and BARCS has also received commitments from the Snyder Foundation for Animals, The Humane Society of the United States, the Baltimore Humane Society, and the MDSPCA. It is their hope to see the perpetrators brought to justice quickly.
The parents of the twins are maintaining their innocence according to the Baltimore Sun, they appeared on camera outside the Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center claiming their boys could not have committed this crime. If anyone has additional information regarding this case, they are still encouraged to contact the Baltimore police immediately.
