Phoenix, the pit bull that was doused in gasoline and severely burned on Wednesday, was humanely euthanized Sunday, May 31. According to Baltimore Animal Care and Rescue Shelter (BARCS) Director Jennifer Mead-Brause, Phoenix’s kidneys began to shutdown on Saturday and the outlook for her long term recovery was grim. The decision was made to euthanize her to prevent additional suffering.
The pit bull was discovered on fire by a police officer in Baltimore. The officer used her sweater to put the fire out. She was immediately taken to BARCS and from there she went to the Swan Harbor Animal Hospital. She had burns on 98% of her body. Vets applied salve and bandages to the dog’s burns and gave her pain medication. Unfortunately, the injuries were so severe that her kidneys could not handle the healing process and began to shut down. At that point, the veterinarians that were caring for her decided that the best decision for Phoenix would be to end her suffering.
According to the BARCS website, a reward fund has been set up for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people involved in this cruel act of violence. Donations can be made through their website and anyone with information is strongly encouraged to contact the Baltimore Police.
On Monday, June 8th police charged Travis and Jermaine Johnson with animal abuse and cruelty. They have been charged as juveniles.
