Mama cat and kittens at Pat Brody Cat Shelter

It's that time of year again, when shelters are brimming with litters of puppies and kittens, to the point that they're overflowing.  It's so important for these youngsters to have an opportunity to live with people in real-life situations, instead of being cooped up in cages, so that they will be properly socialized to live happily with humankind for the rest of their lives.

The Pat Brody Shelter for Cats in Lunenburg is actively seeking qualified foster parents for several expectant mothers, mama cats with young kittens, and orphaned kittens.  It's a wonderful opportunity for anyone who isn't sure she would be able to make a lifelong commitment to a cat, but based on personal experience, I'll bet that most foster parents end up keeping one or more of the kittens who are "temporarily" in their care.

By living in a private home, rather than in a shelter environment, kittens not only receive the loving attention of their doting foster parents, but equally as important, they have a chance to develop their immature immune systems without being challenged by viruses and contagious illnesses that may be harbored by the older cats.

To be accepted as a foster parent, you will need:

  • A warm, dry safe place, away from other cats
  • Resources to feed them the proper food
  • Enough time to foster them until they reach 2 pounds. At that time they will go to our veterinary clinic for shots, testing and spaying/neutering. The shelter will pick them up from the clinic. This can be anywhere from 4 - 6 weeks of foster time, depending upon the age of the kittens.
  • Lots of love and time to socialize/play with the kittens.  The more attention you can lavish on them, the more socialized they become and the easier it is to find them permanent homes.

If you're interested in taking some of these adorable furballs into your home and into your heart, you can fill out the Shelter's online adoption application, and simply indicate your preference to be a foster parent.
