Memphis Redbirds outfielder Shane Robinson has been called up from AAA to the St. Louis Cardinals after the team placed outfielder Rick Ankiel on the disabled list Thursday.
Robinson, 23, adds a right-handed bat to the Cards outfield. Not known as a power hitter, Robinson could be compared to Skip Schumaker — a pesky hitter who puts the ball in play.
Ankiel was initially listed as day-to-day after colliding head first into the centerfield wall Tuesday night while tracking a deep hit ball.
It would be reasonable to assume Robinson would serve as a fourth outfielder while Colby Rasmus, Chris Duncan and Ryan Ludwick take the strong majority of the starts.
In 55 at-bats this year for Memphis, Robinson was batting .345 with an on-base percentage over .400. He had no home runs.
He was selected in the fifth round (166 overall) of the 2006 first-year player draft.
Surprising to some, Robinson was selected over utility man Joe Mather, who played with the major league club last year and seemed as a favorite to make the team until going in a prolonged slump. The continued struggles have continued for Mather at Memphis, where he is hitting around .150.
