It was quite the unexpected surprise that the Cardinals are already strongly involved in what could end up being the biggest trade of the offseason. A trade that would bring All-Star and 2007 MVP runner-up Matt Holliday to Busch Stadium. It is believed Ryan Ludwick would be the centerpiece to bring Holliday to the Cardinals.
But according to some MLB hot-stove writers, it may take much more than just Ludwick to pry Holliday away from the Rockies.
Fox Sport’s Ken Rosenthal has heard through one of his sources it would also take outfielder Skip Schumaker along with pitcher Mitchel Boggs.
In 2008, Schumaker had 540 at-bats, with a respectable line. The problem is he has a difficult time with lefties. Against left handed pitching, Schumaker hit .168 with an OBP of .238. He slugged .185.
| 2008 stats | BA | RBI | HR | OBP | SLG | OPS |
| Schumaker | .302 | 46 | 8 | .359 | .406 | .765 |

In 34 innings with the major league club, Boggs had an ERA of 7.41 with a WHIP of 1.88. He allowed opposing batters to hit .304.
Rosenthal notes that if the Cards were willing to give up three years of Ludwick, four of Schumaker and six of Boggs, the team would certainly make a strong effort to sign Holliday to an extension.
With what seems like it could be the year for the emergence of top prospect Colby Rasmus, there may be no room at the inn for Schumaker. Boggs, who is a well-touted pitching prospect within the organization, showed flashes of brilliance this season, but struggled often — leaving many questions left.
