1) Seattle Sounders FC (3): Seattle may have the third-best record in their conference, but the Sounders are proving tough to beat on their home field of late. Conference leader Houston Dynamo will get a chance to silence their fans on July 11.
2) Chivas USA (2): No games last week, Chivas is sitting pretty, resting up before hosting the Galaxy on July 11.
3) Houston Dynamo (1): Tough loss on the road against an erratic L.A. Galaxy, 1-0, on June 28 dropped Houston from the top spot this week. They’ll look to bounce back against a formidable Wizards team in Kansas City on July 4.
4) DC United (5): DC United slides up one spot in this week’s power rankings due to the Rapids not-so-good week (0-1-1). United is in firs in the Eastern Conference with 23 points and will travel to second-place Columbus Crew (22 points) for a midseason showdown on July 4.
5) Chicago Fire (7): The Fire are going to catch the Rapids at a time when they are beginning to cool off from their June hot streak. Colorado, however, remains unbeaten at home.
6) Kansas City Wizards (6): Kansas City has been up and down lately. They will have a tough test at home against the Dynamo to see where they stand midway through the season.
7) Real Salt Lake (9): After dominating Toronto FC at home last week (3-0 on June 27), RSL will get a home game over the holiday weekend against the last-place San Jose Earthquakes, as they attempt to climb up the standings -- and the rankings.
8) Colorado Rapids (4): Colorado is cooling off as the weather gets hotter. Last week, they tied a weak FC Dallas team, 1-1, before getting blasted by the Sounders in Seattle, 3-0. They look to right the ship against the Fire at home on July 4.
9) Columbus Crew (8): Barely defeating the MLS-worst Red Bulls isn’t a good sign going into their first-place showdown with DC United this weekend.
10) Toronto FC (10): Good home team (2-0 win at home vs. NY on June 24); bad road team (3-0 loss to RSL on June 27). Luckily they get a week off to sure up their road woes. Next up, July 11 at San Jose.
11) Los Angeles Galaxy (12): Impressive win at home versus league-best Houston has the Galaxy on the right track. A showdown with struggling New England is on the docket for the Galaxy. Can the offense step up?
12) FC Dallas (13): Escaping Colorado with a point was unthinkable before the week started. Now, FC will have the role as favorite in their July 4 match with the Red Bulls. Dallas better not underestimate New York or they will lose out on three points like the Rapids did with them.
13) New England Revolution (11): While the lesser teams in the league seem to step up their play, so do the Revolution -- just not in MLS play. Kudos to the Revs for advancing in the Super Liga, but they need to pick up their play if they want to make the playoffs. Although, it’s probably too late.
14) San Jose Earthquakes (14): Playing better on both ends of the field of late, the Quakes won’t convince anyone they are legit playoff contenders until two things happen: 1) They mustn’t allow late-game goals; and 2) They have to win on the road. They’ll have a chance to do both against a streaking RSL on Friday, July 3.
15) New York Red Bulls (15): It’s time for the Red Bulls to start playing spoiler. Games against FC Dallas, L.A. Galaxy and Colorado will give them the chance to ruin others’ opportunity to make the playoffs.
