When the story of Xavier sophomore Jordan Crawford dunking on LeBron James was originally posted, I suggested that the move of confiscating the videotapes could backfire on Nike and LeBron. Backfire would be putting it lightly as this story has blown up in the national media. On nearly every sports webpage and every program on ESPN, all the talk has been about LeBron getting dunked on by Crawford and the whereabouts of the tape.
While the recent news has been another blow to the public perception of LeBron (which began after James refused to shake Orlando players hands after the Cavs were defeated in the playoffs), it has had the opposite effect for Jordan Crawford. Although he hasn't played a minute for the Musketeers, Jordan has already become a Xavier legend. Crawford has also become a household name for sports fans across the nation, which has led to a national media blitz for Jordan today. Crawford appeared on the nationally syndicated Dan Patrick radio show and was interviewed on ESPN's First Take (video below) this morning.
Nike and LeBron James have been quiet about the dunk and the confiscated tapes. We will likely never see video of the dunk. However, in the end that will only add to the legend as the dunk has been built up so big no way it could match the hype. Crawford can't be too upset about the controversy, as video or no video, one dunk in a pick up game has made Jordan Crawford one of the hottest topics in sports and will allow him to tell the story of when he dethroned the King for years to come.
