Former vice-presidential nominee and 2012 presidential hopeful Sarah Palin criticized President Obama's monetary policy during a speech in Hong Kong, China today.
Palin criticized Obama’s plan to give the Fed additional authority to monitor risks to the financial system. The plan is part of the administration's response to last year's banking meltdown that led to $1.6 trillion in bank losses and sparked a global recession.
Obama's Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has defended the proposal before hearings of the Senate Banking Committee. However, the plan to give the Fed additional regulatory power has come under fire from GOP senators, who cite the Fed's failure to adequately wield the power it had and thus forestall the 2008 crisis.
In her speech, Palin amplified such concerns: “How can we think that setting up the Fed as monitor of systemic risk in the financial sector will result in meaningful reform,” she said. “The words ‘fox’ and ‘henhouse’ come to mind.”
Palin's speech, delivered to Asian monetary fund managers and policy makers, ranged widely over economic issues such as Alaskan fishing and world energy policies. True to her reputation as a small-government conservative, she consistently called for market-friendly policies and condemned legislative initiatives that tether free markets and relegate more power over economic issues to governments.
The speech was organized by CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets, the regional brokerage unit of Paris-based Credit Agricole SA.
Palin faced criticism during her 2008 vice-presidential bid for lack of depth and experience in the area of foreign policy. This speech is widely seen as part of an effort for Palin to improve her public standing on these issues, and is being cited as evidence of her interest in a 2012 presidential bid.
