The RNC released a statement yesterday criticizing President Obama's “Cap-And-Trade” climate bill, citing the substantial tax increases and unemployment that would result from enactment of the legislation.

“Unsatisfied with pushing job-killing health care taxes, Senate Democrats are introducing their own job-killing national energy tax today," said RNC Spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski.  "Democrats in the Senate are following the lead of their counterparts in the House who already voted for a national energy tax that would hit [families] up to $1700 a year.”

The House climate bill is HR 2454, the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, otherwise known as the Waxman-Markey bill.  It passed the House on June 26th with only five Republican votes.

On Wednesday, Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and John Kerry (D-MA) released the Senate version of the bill, culminating nine months of hearings and negotiations.  The Senate version will serve as the basis for future reconciliation with the House bill.

The RNC is targeting Boxer as a potential upset in her 2010 Senate reelection bid.  Early speculation on her potential opponent is focusing on Carly Fiorina, former Hewlett-Packard CEO and prominent spokesman for the 2008 presidential campaign of Senator John McCain (R-AZ).

The RNC statement about the legislation makes the following points--

  • Senate Dems’ “Cap-And-Trade” Bill “More Stringent” Than House Dems’ Version
  • Warren Buffet Says Cap-And-Trade “Huge Tax” That Will Hit Poor Americans Hardest
  • Experts Say “Cap-And-Trade” Will Cause Unemployment - Nearly 1 Million Jobs Lost Per Year
  • Obama Administration Admits “Cap-And-Trade” Could Cost American Families Up To $1,761 Per Year
  • CBO Says It Could Decrease Economic Growth By Up To 3.5 Percent In 2050

The statement goes on to reiterate the tax effects of President Obama's health care initiative: "Could Kill 1.6 Million Jobs", "Would Endanger Thousands Of Jobs".
