Let them eat cake…or whatever else they would like.
Philadelphia’s Fairmount Avenue is the place to be on Saturday, July 11 for the annual Bastille Day celebration. The neighborhood surrounding the historical Eastern State Penitentiary ruin will come alive in this rowdy celebration with various events such as the London Grill’s, located at 2301 Fairmont Ave., rioting and uprisings, delicious French cuisine, live musical entertainment, a pet parade conducted by the local pet store, and other festivities to mark the events that set the French Revolution into action. There will even be a reenacted of the infamous beheading of Marie Antoinette.
The reenactment will include enraged “Parisians” clad in authentic costumes of the era forming a "mob" to storm Eastern State Penitentiary, a substitute for the Bastille, battle against “armed troops” to “capture” Antoinette to drag her to a real, functioning guillotine, ignoring her incessant shouts of “Let them eat TastyKake!” as she throws TastyKakes from the prison’s towers to the crowd below. Following all the excitement, a few of the restaurants, such as the London Grill will serve champagne and various quintessentially French dishes to the public.
