What can be better on a hot summer day than all the ice cream? Certainly not a wall of people blocking each and every stand, insufficient room for crowds and little to no supervision within the event tent. That is what I encountered at this year’s “Super Scoops”, all you can eat ice cream fest.
I remembered last year, the fest was much more organized, with a huge variety of ice cream, water ice and popsicles for sampling. I remember fresh baked Philadelphia pretzels for free, constantly playing music, and multiple exits from the tent.
This year, festival goers where herded into an overcrowded tent and were forced to wait while those either too unobservant or too rude to move blocked every available table. You would be lucky if you even had the opportunity to get the $5 admission's worth of frozen treats. This year, other than the packed tent, there were no other supporting corporations. Philly Pretzel factory did not show. There were soft pretzels, but they were for sale.
Chalk it up to a poorly planned and very well supported event, I could not even imagine what the crowds must have been like on Independence Day. However, the charity event for the Joshua Kahan Fund was indeed very well supported. The most surprising (and probably the best) ice cream present was Starbucks (you heard me right), closely followed by Philly Flavors.
Whitney’s fest grade: C+, simply because of the ice cream and the charity behind the festival’s creation. Better luck next year.
