It is that time of year when the invitations in your mailbox are going to come by the dozens, including galas, weddings, and other events where there will probably be a dress code at the bottom specifying the attire you should where for an event.  But what does it all mean? What is Black tie versus Black tie optional? Does that mean an option to wear a tie? No worries, here are your answers.Teri Jon One Shoulder Rosette Strap Gown

Black Tie
A Black Tie invitation calls for formal attire. Usually men are expected to wear tuxedos, women should wear a long dress or gown. A cocktail length dress can be acceptable if it is dressy enough, but safer to go with a full length gown to be safe. If you are not sure then wear something a little dressier than you were originally thinking, that is always a safe way to go.

Black Tie Optional/ Invited
What?! Optional? Like it isn’t enough stress already! A Black Tie Optional or Black Tie Invited invitation gives you the option of wearing a tuxedo or formal dress such as a suit and tie, but you should be able to tell by the invitation. Usually, the “optional” is given so the guests feel more at ease, but the host or hostess wouldn’t put Black Tie on there is they didn’t want it, so keep that in mind when choosing your attire for the evening. Women, can wear cocktail attire, or long dresses.

Semi-Formal/ After Five
You do not have to wear a tuxedo, or a ball gown if you do not want to! A nice dress, not too revealing is appropriate for this type of invitation. You will usually see these types of dress codes for evening weddings for functions. Men wear dark colored suits.

Cocktail Attire
Finally something you can be comfortable in, or at least semi comfortable. This is the most creative of invitations. It leaves it open for interpretation as far as dresses go. Usually something short and elegant, and fashion forward will work here too. Men, darks suits, and depending on your individual event, tie is optional, but use your judgment.

Dressy Casual
Exactly what it sounds like. A casual outfit, dressed up! Depending on the time of year and the occasion, pick something you know and love and dress it up a little with accessories and a good shoe. Women, pants are okay, as well as skirts and separates. Men, you could wear slacks and a sport coat, however do not wear blue jeans, shorts, T-shirts for dressy causal. These are not appropriate.

And as always, if you are unsure what to wear contact your personal stylist to help you dress for the event. This is a sure way to know you are dressing the best way possible for your affair.
