How to select moisturizing products for Black hair
Recently Health and Beauty Examiner Odette wrote "Keeping Black hair moisturized during winter" about the basic concept of keeping hair moist and healthy. However, there are specific ingredients in moisturizers and conditioners that provide maximal hydration.
When selecting moisture rich products remember that the first ingredient listed is the largest quantity of all ingredients, and so on.
Hair care ingredients to look for:
- Water (Aqua) - the ultimate moisturizer
- Natural oils - penetrate the hair ans seal in moisture (jojoba, amla, aloe vera, coconut, olive)
- Glycerin - absorbs moisture from the atmosphere
- Humectants - absorbs moisture from the atmosphere
Hair care ingredients to avoid:
- Heavy oils - sit on top of the hair cuticle but does not penetrate the hair strand; has a tendency to build up on the hair (petroleum, mineral oil, lanolin)
- Harsh detergents - can strip hair of its natural oils further drying the hair (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate)
- Foaming agents - also strip hair of essential oils that alone do not clean hair (Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Xylene Sulfonate)
- Sulfates - although used to treat dandruff these ingredients can irritate the scalp (TEA Lauryl Sulfate, Sulfur, Selenium Sulfide)
- Fragrances - add to product build up on the hair
