Welcome to first edition of the Metal Shuffle!  The premise is simple. I will go to metal-archives.com and review three random metal bands. Since the site's "newest updates" list changes by the minute, I will click three random bands from the list, go to their myspace page and review one of their songs. If the band does not have any songs posted, I will skip to the next band. Lets get this party started!

Decomposing Flesh: Death Metal from La Paz, Bolivia

Well, its a typical name for a brutal death/grind band, but it still reminds me of why metal is such a fun genre. Oh hey! They have a female singer! You can't really see her face, but I'm sure she's pretty hot. Unfortunately I don't get to hear what kind of horrors she's capable of belting out because the tracks on their page are from 2005 while she joined them in 2009. I chose to listen to a track entitled Holocaust of Agony. Evil. Surprisingly enough, I'm kind of digging this! I could do without the breakdown after the first riff, but the rest of the song is solid death-grind, with awesome drumming and catchy riffs that make you forget about that lame breakdown. 1 for 1.

Rain Delay: Melodic Doom/Death Metal from Serbia

Interesting name for a band. Rain Delay is also female fronted! The band photo on their metal archives page worries me a little bit, as they all look like they might be better off hanging around the theatre (yes...spelled with the 'r' and the 'e' reversed) department at your local college while eating sandwiches they bought from Panera Bread. Lets hope they can deliver the goods musically. Their song "My Summer Sojourn (oooo...fancy word)" starts off like a typical melodic death metal song. The vocals are delivered in a gutural death metal fashion, but then it happens. The clean female vocals kick in. I was expecting this, but I didn't expect them to sound exactly like Amy Lee of Evanescence fame. This is bad. Like child molestaion, Ishtar, and the last season of M.A.S.H. bad. Then a tacky mid-song melodic breakdown kicks in with some silly core-ish vocals thrown in and some completely out-of-place blast beats doing nothing but filling silence. The song ends with more Amy Lee rubbish while I have a sudden craving for panini. 1 for 2.

Meressin: Melodic Black/Death Metal from Lithuania

I have no idea what the name means, but Its probably evil. These guys have been around since 1993, but only have three albums under their belt. The song I'll be listening to is called Release the Blind for Dark. The vocals are the first point of interest. They kind of remind me of Entombed, especially the later albums. I like them a lot and they are certainly very unique for this type of music. The song style is ferocious yet melodic, and even slightly gothic (in a non "gay" way). This is music you could easily hear as being "boss music" for a video game. Its pretty sinister and action packed. There are also some pretty cool Mayhem-like clean male vocals, which work well for this song. Towards the later half there are some epic, slowed down guitar leads that allow the listener a nice breather from the fury. I'll definitely be checking out more of their songs. 2 for 3.

Final tally: 2 out of 3

Meressin and Decomposed Flesh are worth a listen (especially the former), but leave Rain Delay to your fourteen-year-old emo sister.
