ABC.com: Summer on ABC

Summer used to be a time of the year when the networks would show repeat after repeat with an occasional Movie of the Week special; however, that all changed when the cable channels began stealing network viewers by airing original programming. Now, the networks have jumped on the bandwagon and roll out new series in the summer specifically designed for the audience’s sun-obsessed mind, i.e. lots of mindless reality shows.

ABC was first out of the gate this year with its summer programming. ’The Bachelorette’, ‘The Goode Family’, ‘Here Come the Newlyweds’, and ‘Wipeout’ have already premiered and are several weeks into their limited runs. ‘The Bachelorette’, of course, is an extension of the popular series ‘The Bachelor’ and is now in its fifth edition. ‘The Goode Family’ is the only new series out of the bunch. It is an animated series co-created by Mike Judge (Beavis and Butt-head, King of the Hill) about a family’s comic misadventures trying to do the “right” thing. ‘Here Comes the Newlyweds’ premiered last summer; it is a reality game show pitting nine sets of newlyweds and their knowledge of marriage against each other to win lots of cash. Finally, ‘Wipeout’, which also premiered last summer, is a crazy obstacle course game show with lots of people… wiping out.

Still to premiere for ABC this summer are ‘I Survived a Japanese Game Show’ (Wednesday, June 17th), ‘The Superstars’ (Tuesday, June 23rd), and ‘Dating in the Dark’ (Monday, July 20th). ‘I Survived a Japanese Game Show’ is back for its second summer look at how silly 12 Americans can appear when competing on the wacky Japanese game show ‘Majide’. ‘The Superstars’ is a new entry this summer updating an ABC ‘Wide World of Sports’ series of the same name. The premise is simple: eight teams consisting of an athlete and a celebrity will compete against one another in athletic activities until only one team is left standing. Don’t think too strenuous; the tagline Minimal Clothing has been used by ABC in recent advertisements. Finally, ‘Dating in the Dark’, which is also new this summer, is a dating reality show purporting to take looks out of the equation by having three men and three women choose the person they want to continue “dating” after only interacting with them in a dark room.

In addition to these summer programs, ABC is also offering viewers some repeats of favorite shows (Grey’s Anatomy), final episodes of cancelled shows (Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, Samantha Who?), and new installments of infotainment (Primetime, 20/20). Overall, there should be something for almost every type of viewer.
