This week ‘The Mentalist’, TV’s #1 ranked new fall show, began airing on Thursday nights following ‘CSI’ in addition to its normal Tuesday night slot. This is in preparation for the program’s permanent move to Thursdays where it will reside on CBS’ 2009 fall schedule replacing the cancelled “Eleventh Hour’. This summer double showing of ‘The Mentalist’ presents a great opportunity for those viewers who need to catch up with Patrick Jane and the rest of the CBI (California Bureau of Investigation) team.
Last night’s episode, ‘Red Hair and Silver Tape’, was originally the second of the season and continued to introduce the series' characters. Simon Baker plays Patrick Jane, a TV psychic turned CBI special consultant haunted by the murder of his wife and daughter by serial killer Red John. Robin Tunney plays Teresa Lisbon, the CBI Senior Agent who likes/dislikes having Jane on the team. Tim Kang plays Kimball Cho, the CBI agent with a dry, serious sense of humor. Owain Yeoman plays Wayne Rigsby, the goofy CBI agent in love with the final member of the team, Grace Van Pelt played by Amanda Righetti; the techie CBI agent who is newest to the team.
Over the course of the season ‘The Mentalist’ explored the guilt Jane felt due to his family’s death, the blossoming romance between Rigsby and Van Pelt, and the love/hate relationship between Lisbon and Jane. There were also two visits from Jane’s nemesis Red John. Of course, there were also 20 mysteries that could only be solved through a combination of Jane’s observational insights and the CBI team’s crack investigative skills. Looking forward to next season, ew.com’s Michael Ausiello reports there will be yet another CBI agent introduced to stir things up.
‘The Mentalist’ is a CBS crime procedural with a nice twist. Use the summer to watch any episodes missed and do some investigation on why all the episodes so far include red or some shade of red in the title.
