Due to Tea Party mania, it might be possible that few people noticed a big announcement with regards to the 2010 race for the Governor's mansion.

Yesterday, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle held a press conference to disclose that he was withdrawing from the race to be Georgia's next Governor. Cagle, who had been leading in polls prior to the announcement, cited health and family reasons as the factor behind his sudden withdrawal.

He cited continuing health problems, and said he would take the rest of the year to rest and recover from spinal and surgery so that he could...return to the campaign trail to be re-elected Lieutenant Governor?

That section is more than a bit surprising. The Lieutenant Governor's race is not a guaranteed win for Cagle, and will also require a lot of effort. It would make more sense if he had pulled out entirely from any election race or just suspended his campaign for governor. Frankly, at the end of the year, the gubernatorial campaign would not have come close to heating up yet, and his fund-raising totals so far were pretty significant.

He could ride out an extended period of non-activity in a gubernatorial campaign thanks to plush coffers and an early lead in the polls. While it would definitely shrink, he would still be considered a heavy factor by the time he finished rehabilitating from surgery. As is, if he does run again for Lieutenant Governor, he is still going to face a contested primary.

In a poll released last week, Cagle led at 28%. Here are the other contenders for the Republican nod:

  • John Oxendine 14%
  • Karen Handel 6%
  • Austin Scott 4%
  • Sam Olens 2%

There could be more entrants after this announcement to take over the spot of the true current poll leader...

  • Undecided 46% - as I said, it's early.

Too early to drop out, in my opinion.
