Weekly performance art openings July 5th – July 11th
Each week I will be endeavoring to list new productions opening around the Twin Cities. With such an abundance of companies and venues in the area, keeping track of openings can be a challenge. I'm almost certain to miss a few, but I'll link whatever I can find. Provided descriptions are reprinted from production websites.
Opening July 9th
Bedlam Theatre: The Burning Ones – Origin of the Flame
A mad scientist’s experiment conjures a spark that ignites a whole town, changing the resident’s lives forever. Road Warrior meets Dr Frankenstein meets The Princess Bride – live on stage in the parking lot.
The production features original fire props costuming (including fire fans, swords, whips, eating, breathing, wings, skirts, flaming set pieces and special effects including a REAL LIVE TESLA COIL in honor of Nikola Tesla's July birthday (153rd). Runs through 07/18.
Brave New Workshop: The Brave New Workshop Saves the Planet; or Yes We Can, but Do We Have To? (Previews 07/09 – 07/16)
Worn down by the demands of the world on your shoulders? Have no fear; The Brave New Workshop is here to save the day. No issue too large or too green. Come witness this quintet of comedy battle the world's evils blow by blow with The Brave New Workshop Saves the Planet, or Yes We Can, but Do We Have To? Audiences can sit back and relax as The Brave New Workshop team triumphs over all--including your funny bone. Runs through 10/31.
The Flower Shop Project @ Bryant Lake Bowl: Dawn’s Inferno – A Divine Comedy
Part way through her life’s journey, Dawn Ahlgren finds herself in a dark wood… Darkwood, MN. Returning to her hometown for her ten-year high school reunion, Dawn is trapped in the Inferno Bar & Grill, surrounded by classmates determined to prove that Hell is indeed other people. Based on The Inferno by Dante Alighieri, Dawn’s Inferno is an innovative and hilarious update of Dante’s classic trip through Hell, re-invented as another kind of divine comedy. Runs at Bryant Lake Bowl through 07/25.
Illusion Theater: My Antonia
Part of Illusion Theater’s 2009 Fresh Ink Series. Cather’s vibrant character of Antonia Shimerda is brought to life on stage in this portrait of the American West as narrator Jim Burden returns home after twenty years to see the immigrant girl who shaped his understanding of life. Runs through 07/12.

Lyric Arts: Meet Me in St. Louis
In St. Louis, in the summer of 1903, as the Smith sisters fret about simple things like boys and love, a dark cloud appears on the horizon: their father has just been offered a job in New York City—just as the World’s Fair is coming to town! Based on the 1944 film starring Judy Garland, this joyous musical includes classic songs like The Boy Next Door, The Trolley Song, and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. Appropriate for ages 7 and up. Runs through 07/26.
SteppingStone Theatre: Hans Christian Andersen’s The Nightingale
The Emperor thinks that there’s nothing more beautiful than the song of his beloved Nightingale. Until he’s given a wind-up replica! The poor Nightingale is left sad and alone—practically forgotten. But when the Emperor falls ill, and the mechanical bird can’t cheer him up, will the Nightingale save the day? Runs through 08/02.
