The Roots

Long before earning the somewhat dubious distinction of house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Roots had already established themselves as one of the most innovative and intelligent acts in hip-hop. Rising from the soul-inspired Philadelphia music scene, the group infused socially aware lyrics with live instrumentation, making for a refreshing contrast to mainstream hip-hop’s predominant emphasis on hedonistic materialism. Since their origins in the early 1990s the group has maintained a reputation for daring performances that showcase their ability to mix genres into an intoxicatingly diverse musical brew. Drink it in on July 2nd at First Avenue.

As an aside, I’ll be stepping back from these weekly concert announcements. The time involved with pulling the listings just got to be too consuming. I’ll still be writing up news of upcoming shows and notable artists, but the weekly announcements must sadly become a thing of the past.
