Each week I will be endeavoring to list new productions opening around the Twin Cities. With such an abundance of companies and venues in the area, keeping track of openings can be a challenge. I'm almost certain to miss a few, but I'll link whatever I can find. Provided descriptions are reprinted from production websites.
Opening June 16th
Ordway Center: Singin’ in the Rain
In 1952, Singin' in the Rain burst upon the scene and became one of the most celebrated movie musicals of all time. The musical stage production embraces the best of the beloved songs and characters and adds a remarkable dimension that delights theater lovers. This show overflows with romance and unforgettable dancing, and YES, it is going to rain! Runs through 06/28.

Orpheum Theater: A Chorus Line
In an empty theatre, on a bare stage, casting for a new Broadway musical is almost complete. For 17 dancers, this audition is the chance of a lifetime. It’s what they’ve worked for—with every drop of sweat, every hour of training, every day of their lives. It’s the one opportunity to do what they’ve always dreamed—to have the chance to dance. This is A Chorus Line, the musical for everyone who’s ever had a dream and put it all on the line. Winner of nine Tony Awards®, including Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for drama, this singular sensation returns to Minneapolis on the heels of its critically acclaimed Broadway revival. Come meet the new generation of Broadway’s best. Runs through 06/21.

Opening June 18th

Ballet of the Dolls @ the Ritz Theater: Romiette & Juleo
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet provides the backdrop for the modern day story of Romiette and Juleo. Ballet of the Dolls transforms the traditional story of love and lovers from feuding families into a reflection of social judgment and discrimination against same sex couples. The tragedy of this story arrives in the sad reality of the AIDS epidemic. Join Ballet of the Dolls for this timely adaptation of a timeless love story. Runs through 06/28.

Live Action Set @ the Guthrie Theater: My Father’s Bookshelf (Previews 06/18)
The Guthrie presents My Father’s Bookshelf, a world premiere by Twin Cities theater makers Live Action Set. In collaboration with members of the Minnesota Alzheimer’s community, Live Action Set has created a tragic comedy about our collective response to dementia. In a world of doctors, care providers, lost memories and people who try to take away the car keys, one extremely affable, optimistic man with Alzheimer’s disease explores the joys of life, set against the struggles of his family and the passionate lecture of a neuroscientist. Runs through 06/28.

TU Dance @ theSouthern Theater: Summer Performance
Vibrating with a unique intensity and vision, Toni Pierce- Sands and Uri Sands’ TU Dance returns to the Southern for its annual summer event. This season the company presents a new concert featuring two world premieres by choreographer Uri Sands: Sense(ability) Sketch 2 continues a series exploring the vigorous synergy between the senses and the elements; Blue Folk (working title) examines the darker aspects of family dynamics. Sands’ luscious choreography incorporates dialects from ballet, West African, traditional, modern and streetwise American dance, rendered with simultaneous distinctiveness and cohesion by the company’s sumptuous, razor-sharp execution. Runs through 06/28.

Opening June 19th

University of MN Centennial Showboat: Is There a Doctor in the House?
Join the U of M Showboat Players on board the Minnesota Centennial Showboat this summer for a healthy dose of old fashion fun. Is There a Doctor in the House? is your cure for the summertime blues. Based on "The Imaginary Invalid" by Molière, the story centers on Argan, a hypochondriac whose obsession with his health and following his physician’s advice becomes more intolerable than actually being ill. A comedy of misdirection, mistaken identities, and misdiagnosis, the production will also fill your prescription for musical entertainment with our delightful olios (signature Vaudvillesque musical numbers). Is There a Doctor in the House? is sure to leave you in stitches, whether you need them or not! Runs through 08/29.
