Ben Folds

Since his emergence as the frontman and principal songwriter of the power pop trio Ben Folds Five, Ben Folds has demonstrated a marked proficiency for smuggling slyly acerbic lyrics inside deceptively catchy melodies. Cradled within such skillful musical craftsmanship, Folds’ best compositions utilize irony laced vocals and eccentric wit to simultaneously satirize and celebrate pop conventions. The results have been a mixed bag (collaborations with William Shatner are hard to regard as anything more than novelties), but taken collectively his work demonstrates one of the more subversive singer-songwriters in contemporary music. On October 31st Folds will be performing a unique variation of his songbook in collaboration with the Minnesota Orchestra. While the orchestral arrangements look to transform Folds’ music, the lyrical barbs and melodic hooks are expected to remain just as sharp. Tickets are now available to Minnesota Orchestra subscribers while general public on-sale will begin July 17th.
