Elvis Costello adds flavor to Taste of Minnesota
The organizers behind
Taste of Minnesota, the annual summer festival at Saint Paul’s Harriet Island, had insisted that the 2009 event would feature a freshening up of musical performers. Responding to critics that had dismissed past festivals’ entertainment as mere nostalgia acts, the organizers insisted that this year would mark a turning point. Until last week, however, the musical menu consisted of little more than the metallic flavored cheese of
Judas Priest,
Whitesnake,
Bret Michaels (ex frontman for Poison), and
Adler’s Appetite (named for Steven Adler, former Guns ‘N Roses drummer). Even younger artists
Staind,
Chevelle, and
Halestorm were an extension of the same metal vein. With the addition of
Elvis Costello and the Imposters, however, Taste of Minnesota has been given a much needed infusion of stylistic diversity and restless vitality.
First gaining acclaim with his debut, 1977’s My Aim is True, Elvis Costello has charted a musical course than defies easy categorization. While his early work is critically lauded (generically) as being landmarks of New Wave, Costello has tirelessly explored such musical forms as country, soul, R&B, and classical. Rather than be pigeonholed to any one style, Costello’s records tend to incorporate elements from a wealth of influences, making for a musically rich tapestry to surround his vastly literate lyrics. While various periods have proven more rewarding than others, it is this thrilling unpredictability that continues to make Costello such an intriguing artist.
Touring with his longtime supporting band The Imposters, the rock-and-roll hall-of-famer is likely to serve up a set-list drawing from his extensively rich back-catalog along with selections from his highly anticipated, T-Bone Burnett produced, new album Secret, Profane, and Sugarcane, due for release on June 2nd. For music fans with a taste for genre defying virtuosity, Costello is an ideal main course.
