Here in the Twin Cities one sure sign of the holiday season is the Guthrie Theater’s annual staging of A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens’ enduring ode to benevolence and goodwill. Spreading some advance cheer, the Guthrie will team with local television station KARE-11 for a charitable venture worthy of the rehabilitated Ebenezer Scrooge. On November 17th, the two organizations will co-sponsor a holiday food drive to benefit the Emergency Food Shelf Network.

Founded in 1976, the Emergency Food Shelf Network has long sought to provide nutritious offerings to underprivileged persons throughout Minnesota. The locally based, nonprofit organization provides over 7 million pounds of food annually, collecting and storing until ready for distribution to network of over 200 hunger relief programs. Few organizations have proven as resourceful in stocking food shelves across Minnesota with the means to create well-balanced, high-quality meals.

The November 17th “drive-thru” food drive will take place in front of the Guthrie Theater between 6-9 a.m. Participants will be able to place their donations at a curbside drop-off before partaking of a free cup of coffee or cider, a holiday treat from Sea Change restaurant, and a special thank you package containing discounts to the Guthrie and Sea Change.

With the holidays clashing against dire economic realities, many will find themselves questioning how to appropriately observe the season. Helping to relieve the hunger in our communities is one gift, it could be suggested, which actually exceeds our loftiest holiday sentiments.
