Passionate American artist Tori Amos is currently in the midst of her US/European tour which will grace the city of Detroit on August 8th. The tour is in celebration of her new album titled Abnormally Attracted to Sin which was released on May 19, 2009. She will be appearing at the Detroit Opera House fresh off of her artistic Independence from Epic records one year ago.
The feisty artist has always shown opposition to conventional forms of music and the demand to adhere to them. At age 11 she was kicked out of the Peabody Conservatory of Music for what she assessed to be her interest in rock and popular music coupled with her dislike of reading from sheet music. Her first band was called Y Kant Tori Read which was a reference to her experience at Peabody and featured Steve Caton and Matt Sorum. Tori began as a solo act and was thrown into the early 90s grunge, rap, and rock music environment.
After being signed to Atlantic, Amos released Little Earthquakes, Under the Pink, Boys for Pele, From the Choirgirl Hotel, To Venus and Back, and Strange Little Girls. Each album was met with places on all of the charts and differed greatly. Amos' early albums focused on instrumental arrangements and begun to shift the focus to her solo piano. To Venus and Back as well as From the Choirgirl Hotel were more up to date with music technology, giving them elements of dance and electronica. Her final release with Atlantic Strange Little Girl was her first concept album and included artwork for the different women portrayed in each song.
She was then signed to Epic records and released the albums Scarlet's Walk, The Beekeeper, and American Doll Posse; which received mixed reviews, but further fueled Amos' dissatisfaction with large record labels. In 2008, she gained her musical Independence and stated that she would be working with independent labels for future works.
Abnormally Attracted to Sin is described by Amos as "handmade" and explores uncovering the right to think for yourself. Amos shares her beliefs and escape from the grip of what controls many individuals. The introspective album is said to be as passionate and vigilant as Amos has ever been.
