It’s old news that Paula Abdul won’t be returning to judge the upcoming season of American Idol, but now Fox Network has announced her replacement: Ellen DeGeneres!

Ellen might not have professional singing experience, but she’s got gusto for A.I. On her talk show, Ellen announced her news with enthusiasm, telling her audience that she never misses an episode of Idol. She went on to say, “I love everything about it and I love music, as you know. Hopefully I'm the people's point of view because I'm just like you.”

This won’t be Ellen’s first stint as a reality show judge. In August, DeGeneres guest-judged So You Think You Can Dance, where she offered more comic relief than actual criticism. Ellen is undoubtedly hilarious, but with critiques such as, “There’s dancing and there’s DANCING, and that was DA-A-ANCING,” her opinions seemed slightly unnecessary.

There’s no question that Ellen DeGeneres will bring an element of amusement to Idol. After the tension and backstage drama that surrounded the show’s previous seasons, a dose of lighthearted humor could be just what Idol needs.

So, what do you think? Will Ellen attract hoards of new viewers? Would be better off with three judges?
