We imagine everyone is making plans for this Saturday’s Fourth of July celebrations and we want to remind you to include your pets in your plans. If you are going out of town you hopefully are either taking your pet(s) with you, or have their care all taken care of with a tried and true pet sitter or a good boarding facility. If your pets are staying at home with you or a sitter please remember that most dogs and cats and even livestock are scared of flashes and loud noises which usually means a significant increase in lost pets right after the 4th. Livestock can run into fencing injuring themselves and if they wander onto a roadway a severe accident could happen to human and animal alike. Dogs and cats left outside end up lost as they try to run from the noises and flashes.

If at all possible bring your dogs and cats inside BEFORE any fireworks start and keep them in until well after all of the flashes and bangs are finished for the evening. They may still be scared and hide in a quiet spot in the house, but at least they will be safe at home. If your pet cannot come in the house, then consider containing it in your garage or shop or barn as long as it isn’t so hot to be dangerous to your pet. But make sure any hazardous materials are put out of reach of your pet no matter where they stay. Once the fireworks are done for the night you should then be able to safely let your pet back outside.

Now if despite everything your pet is lost, please call us at the shelter as soon as possible so we can take a lost report. We will be closed on both Saturday and Sunday, 4 & 5 July, but our staff will still check the answering machine for any reports of either lost or found pets as we love reuniting pets with their owners.

Many thanks to all of the great folks who bought supplies to donate to us at our supply drive at the Millbrook Wal-Mart this past Saturday. And many thanks to Wal-Mart and to our volunteers who braved the heat outside.

And you will hear about this for the next three weeks – make sure your plans are set to join us at our Wags & Whiskers "Bone-A-Fit" Silent Auction on Friday, July 17th at the Wetumpka Civic Center. We have a cornucopia of incredible items and you can preview each and every item on our website at www.elmorehumane.com. There will also be great food and drink, music, door prizes and just a super evening of fun. Admission is $15 per person, or $25 per couple and the doors will open at 6:30 pm. We are still accepting items for the auction and for any questions about donating or the auction itself give us a call at 334/567-3377 or email hselco@bellsouth.net.

With the auction right around the corner and to help us with our final pre-auction planning, we are moving our monthly shelter board meeting up one week to Tuesday, 7 July at 6:30. Watch our website for the location as it will either be at its normal location at Trinity Episcopal Church on Hwy 231 or perhaps at the Civic Center if we are able to coordinate for that location.

Pet of the Week-Camille
Camille is a one-year old spayed female Australian Shepherd/Lab mix who came to us with a litter of puppies and now it is her turn to find her home. She is about 55 lbs, great with other dogs, very loving and gentle and she would be just great for a family. Our adoption fee is $70 for our cats and $90 for dogs and we add $10 if we have also gotten their rabies vaccinations done but you get the tag and certificate. These adoption fees cover the cost of the mandatory spay/neuter, basic immunizations, de-worming and a free health exam. To see Camille or any other of our great pets, come to the shelter at 255 Central Plank Road, Wetumpka, AL, 36092, call us at 334-567-3377 or go to our website at www.elmorehumane.com . We are open for adoptions Mon-Thu 10-4, Fri 10-5, but we will be closed Sat, July 4th.
