More animals are being dropped off at shelters, than in the past, due to the money crunch felt by Americans.  Unfortunately these innocent pets are the fallout, colateral damage, of a brutal economy.  Is there anything you can do to help?  Yes, you can help this weekend, in more ways than one.  PetSmart’s in Montgomery and Prattville, will host their big Spring Adoption Weekend May 1, 2nd and 3rd.   Friday will kick off the festivities with a puppy and dog showcase, and possibly a kitten or two, starting at 4pm and on Saturday 11am-4pm, and again Sunday Noon-4pm. You may even see Savannah, a 2-3 year old, Black Retriever mix, who is a sweetie, with lovely manners and a love for all (that is, if this beauty hasn’t found a home already!).  This event is a much needed end (wishful thinking) to a disturbing means.

Humane Society of Elmore County will also have volunteers at the Millbrook WalMart on Saturday from 10am-2pm for a Supply Drive. The spike in the number of animals being dropped off at the shelter, has left shelter supplies in dire straits. Volunteers will be handing out cards of the shelters needs, with the most needed items being marked inside the store. So, while you shop till you drop, pick up a few items to donate to animals in need, and if you are unable to make it Saturday, a list of items is provided below, just pick up a few extra and drop it by the shelter.

As reported in an earlier column, recipes are still needed for the cookbook, which will be sold to raise money for the shelter. Please e-mail your famous recipe to livinon227easyst@msn.com, with your name. To volunteer for the shelter and help out the wonderful animals contact, Charline Pope at popecharlie@russellcorp.com or call the shelter at 334-567-3377.

Anyone wishing to donate an item to auction for the "Wags & Whiskers Bone-a-Fit" please contact the shelter at 334-567-3377.

Items desperately needed to care for ECHS animals.

Bleach, Fabuloso Liquid Detergent and Liquid Dishwashing Soap. We also always need Kitty Litter (non-clumping), Canned Dog and Cat Food, Puppy and Kitten Chow, Paper Towels, 40 & 13 Gal Plastic Garbage Bags, Doggy & Kitty Treats, Ammonia, Ink Pens, Notepads, Scotch Tape, Old Bath Towels and Doggy Shampoo.
