MoonPie Over Mobile

Looking for something a little different for a New Year’s celebration?  Try MoonPie over Mobile!  The city will ring in the New Year with a massive MoonPie, raised high above the city, to kick off its annual Mardi Gras season.  Chattanooga Bakery  has baked MoonPie confections since 1917, and for Mobile, Alabama’s New Years celebration, will bake a mountain of marshmallow, graham cracker and banana.

RC and a Moonpie please! The MoonPie has long been a staple of the Mobile Mardi Gras booty throw, and in that spirit, became the brainchild of Councilman Fred Richardson.  Needing a bigger draw for their annual celebration, the MoonPie was just the right fit, and flavor. Measuring four feet wide, weighing 60 pounds and containing 45,000 calories, it promises to delight holiday revelers.  And since it is against Alabama State Law to have a MoonPie without an RC cola, 5,000 cans will be donated by RC Cola Company.

Festivities begin at 8:00pm with a large array of entertainment and performances.  The MoonPie raising will take place at Cooper Riverside Park located at the foot of Government Street.   At 9:50pm a Mardi Gras procession will begin at Fort Conde and continue to the park. The countdown to 2009 will begin at 11:59pm, with the Moonpie raising at midnight and a fireworks display at 12:15pm.

So bundle up the kids, throw on something festive, head on down to the park, and grab a taste of the largest Moonpie in the World.   Wash that down with a cold RC Cola, and sit back for a great fireworks display.   With a MoonPie, an RC, and fireworks, you have all you need to welcome 2009, Mobile Alabama style.
