Gas prices seem to be all over the place lately. I've seen price change by more then 15 cents in the last two weeks. Until we're independant from such volatile priced resources there's not much we can do about that, we can however mimize our pain at the pump with some selective shopping and a bit of brand loyalty.
I won't name any gas companies, but if you do your research, you'll find that many have their own credit cards, member/loyalty cards, and gift cards; it's through them that you can save yourself some serious cash. Gift cards are an often overlooked source of savings; some stations have discounts for getting certain dollar amounts charged up on the gift card (such as $45 for a $50 card) or discount off the price per gallon when you redeem the gift card. It's a minor change to start using Gift Cards all the time and the savings can really add up. Pay for a gift card with the same companies credit card and get extra points or other discounts for an added bonus.
Then you've got the gas station companies that have either a points or a spending threshold for redemptions, suddenly by using your member/loyalty card and/or your gas station credit card, you're getting free fuel on occasion.
Furthermore with websites like Gas Buddy and even some gas brands own websites, you can spend a few minutes online and find the cheapest station or a certain type of stations cheapest location and save a few more cents on top of that. You may be surprised how often gas prices are 5-10 cents different at the same brand of station just a few miles apart.
Right now I'm getting 6 cents off the price per gallon and I'm more then halfway to getting a $50 free fuel card with the program I'm in. This year my fuel savings include 2 $50 cards, 1 $20 card, 3 cents off the price per gallon for using a gift card this entire year, 6 cents off the price per gallon this month (3 cents off for using the gift card plus 3 cents off the price per gallon for having a membership card), and 50 cents the price per gallon for a single fillup. Not bad for gas I was already going to buy. So be vigilant, do your research and save at the pump.
