Summer is the time of year when our energy levels soar. This is due in part to the longer days, which feed our bodies with rich sunlight bringing with it an increase in energy. Additionally, we’re more inclined to have more energy because we are more active in the summer. We take advantage of the beautiful California sunshine by riding bikes with the family, walking or running the Los Gatos Creek Trail, taking the kids to the park, etc. The more active we are the more energy we acquire. The return on investment for moving the body every day is immense.

The other reason we have more energy in the summer is due to our diets. We gravitate more towards raw foods like fresh green salads and fresh whole fruits as they are quite appealing in the hot summer months. Listening to the body’s cravings for more cooling foods in the summer will help create balance within. The advantages of eating more raw vegetables and fresh fruits are numerous. Increasing our consumption of phytonutrients, which are found only in plant foods, provides the body with protective nutrients that are known to combat cancer and enhance immunity among many other benefits.

Green plant foods are very high in iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, folic acid and vitamins A, C, E and K. Pumping more plant foods into our bodies can definitely give the immune system a boost. Additionally, consuming these foods in their raw form adds more fiber to the diet, thus helping to improve a sluggish digestive system. When the body doesn’t have to work as hard to remove wastes or fight off disease the outcome is more vibrant health and bountiful energy.
