Here are five simple things you can begin doing today that will help you look and feel better in no time.

1. Increase your consumption of healthy fats
Our body needs fat for many reasons, but not the kind of fat found in a hamburger or french fries. We need the healthy type of fats found in walnuts, avocados, fatty fish like wild Alaskan salmon, fish oil supplements and flax seeds. Consuming these foods on a daily basis can lead to improved heart health, reduced inflammation throughout the body and a healthier brain. A handful of nuts, 1-2 tbsp. of ground flax seeds or 1-2 grams of fish oil a day can make a big difference.

2. Add color to your diet
Eat a rainbow of colors at each meal. Consuming more whole fruits and vegetables each day will provide your body with a variety of powerful antioxidants. Different colored fruits and vegetables contain different types of antioxidants. Your body needs a variety of antioxidants to boost immunity, enhance muscle, bone and skin integrity and fight oxidative stress. Eating a variety of antioxidants is a great anti-aging strategy.

3. Drink 1-2 cups of green tea daily
Green tea contains healthy antioxidants called catechins, which have been shown to inhibit cancer cell activity and stimulate the production of immune strengthening enzymes. A strong immune system helps protect your body from the bombardment of free radicals encountered on a daily basis. Most regular and decaffeinated green teas contain equal amounts of antioxidants.

4. Vary your diet from day to day
Variety is key to ensuring that you are obtaining a good balance of essential nutrients. One of the best ways to vary your diet is by trying new recipes and new foods often. This will also help to prevent boredom. Most importantly, choosing the most nutrient dense foods, such as whole foods like fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts/seeds and whole grains will provide the body with much needed vitamins and minerals.

5. Move your body
Getting some type of physical activity every day has huge health benefits. Hiring a personal trainer or joining a gym isn’t required to reap the benefits. Studies show that just 30 minutes of brisk walking every day will help keep your heart healthy and strong. Do the things that you enjoy doing most whether it's gardening, walking your dog, dancing around the kitchen or playing sports. Just about any type of movement will suffice, especially if you lead a predominantly sedentary lifestyle.
