One of the many benefits of living in Santa Clara County is the easy access to multiple farmers’ markets. Whether you live in San Jose or Saratoga, locating a farmer’s market near your home is easy to do most days of week.

A great advantage of shopping at the farmer’s market is it takes the guesswork out of knowing what’s in season. Eating with the seasons is one of the healthiest ways to eat. It’s very natural for our bodies to crave, digest and assimilate cantaloupe and nectarines in late spring and summer, and root vegetables such as sweet potatoes and parsnips in the winter.

Our bodies thrive when we eat primarily the foods that are in season and those that are grown locally, as this keeps us in tune with the cycles of Nature. Think about how great you feel on a hot summer’s night after eating a large mixed green salad for dinner with fresh corn-on-the-cob on the side and a big bowl of strawberries for dessert.

These wonderfully delicious and nutritious foods are yours for the taking each week right in your own neighborhood. It’s difficult to find fruits and vegetables that are fresher than those at the farmer’s market because all the produce is brought in from local farms. A number of these local farms are certified organic, which is another good reason to shop there.

If you haven’t visited a farmer’s market in a while or have never taken the time to check one out, summer is the perfect season to give it a try.
