Where would you like to be if you could go anywhere for the 4th of July? Consider being at the “gateway to the west” positioned right under that Arch so that it frames the fireworks display. Where is that exactly? It is on the Mississippi River in Saint Louis, MO where they shoot off a spectacular display from barges in the river to a musical accompaniment that can move you to tears. The display can be seen from Missouir and also just across the river is East St. Louis, in Illinois. The fireworks will be shot off Friday and Saturday at 9:15 p.m. The Counting Crows will perform Friday at 8:00 p.m. and Train will perform at 8:00 p.m. Saturday before the displays begin.
You need to arrive early to get set up with blankets, chairs, snacks and cooler to Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard at the St. Louis Riverfront. It is a long wait but well worth the effort. Or send someone to hold your place under the Arch and go see the parade. Admission to all events is free. Call 314-533-1285 if you need information.
The nation's most spectacular Independence Day parade will kick off at 10:00 a.m., at Fourth St. and Washington Avenue, with giant helium balloons, elaborate custom-built floats and a spirited competition among marching bands. More than 100 units will stretch over five miles in length, including 16 bands with more than 1,500 members. This year's parade theme is "Everybody Needs a Vacation," in keeping with the parade's traditions of patriotic celebration and spectacular entertainment for the entire family. We can say amen to that.
If arriving cross country the fireworks are visible from Interstate Highways I-70, I-44, I-64 and I-55 that all come together there. Flights to St. Louis are usually very reasonable from all over the country since it is a crossroads for the airlines as well and they also have been offering air and hotel packages to attract the summer visitors. Many people watch the fireworks from their balcony or the roof top. Try checking with www.TripMama.com who say they can “save you 65% now”.
AOL's Digital City, Missouri's Fair St. Louis and Live on the Levee event is ranked 5th in the nation for the best fireworks display, beating Chicago and New York City. One source says it was voted one of the Top 10 Best Places to Watch Fireworks in 2008. It is fun for the whole family with free children's activities in the AmerenUE/Schnucks K-Town Kids Zone and entertainment on the Buster Brown Kids Stage in the river view park.
Whether you rank it fifth, eighth or even first, there is no doubt Fair St. Louis has some of the best fireworks in the nation. The great Midwestern spirit of wholesome American and family values add even more value to the occasion. So picture this, lying on a blanket with the stars and fireworks framed in the great Arch holding close someone you love, the sounds of laughter and then the great American songs and lyrics beginning to swell; and you’ll agree it is an event not to be missed.
