The 7Nuns, Kevin (c), at a homebrewers festival.

Knowing people who make their own beer is good for obvious reasons. This means good beer, even good enough to sell. The 7Nuns are a small group of homebrewers in Sacramento who have done this by winning the Brewer For A Day competition at The Rubicon Brewery. The Rubicon stays close to the homebrewing community, and offering this competition is one way of keeping with their roots. (Brewmaster Scott Cramlet and Brewer Al Griffin both started brewing at home.)

The brewers that comprise The 7Nuns have done this three times now. That's all three years this contest has been offered, and once for each member pictured (Larry Zinky and Stu Baker are the other two brewers). The winning member this time is Kevin Depies. His Scottish Ale was chosen by The Rubicon for its quality, as well as the ability to fit into their line up. This is a caramelly, malty beer that's low on the bitterness, and has about 5.5 alcohol by volume. The homebrewed version has been available in select garages, and those who have tried it, have raved about the homemade version (one of those advantages of knowing people who make beer). Due to be released on June 30th at 5PM, this will be on tap for a few weeks as this was a 10-barrel (20 keg) batch. Fans of real ale will be pleased to find out that this beer will be served on a cask in the traditional English style. This will be very limited and is likely to predate the official release on June 30th.

Talking with Al Griffin, anyone can see that he's still excited about brewing, and supporting those who are also passionate about good beer is important to him. The 7Nuns are passionate too. Their motto is "Make it a habit." I never did ask what that means. I just assumed it had something to do with great beer.
