A great resume can really make a huge difference as to whether or not you get noticed by a recruiter.
Shorter is always better, try to keep your resume to one page - two at the most, never go beyond two pages.
I know you may have a great deal of experience to share, but providing too much detail and too much information to read can get you put in the "no" pile very quickly.
Put yourself in the recruiter's place, having dozens, maybe even hundreds of resumes to screen for a position will cause you to screen more out than in; especially if the resumes take too long to read and the content is difficult to navigate.
Always generate the first draft yourself, even if you are going to a professional for help. Who knows better than you do who you are and what you are capable of doing? Then let the experts modify the format and content to get you noticed. You may need to develop more than one version if you are targeting a variety of industries and diverse employers.
You may not have the funds available now (many of us do not) to hire professional resume assistance. No problem, there are plenty of resources out there, especially on-line to help you.

Remember, it is always a good idea to have someone else review your resume for typos, format, grammar and quality of content.
Your resume is the most important resource you have to get yourself noticed. Take it very seriously.
