Creative networking is must if you are going to find the right position, expand the sales of your product or service, find your space in a new community, or give back to those who are less fortunate than we are.
Salt Lake City is no different than any other city in this respect. Many of us grew up here and have our circle of friends and acquaintances that we see or speak with on a regular basis. This is important, but it is not enough for success, you must work to build upon what you already have.
Most of us look to those we already know, this is a good start. Who can introduce us to our next boss, business partner or donor for the future? In his book The Tipping Point, (Gladwell, 2002), Malcolm Gladwell identified people known as "connectors, people who have a special give of bringing the world together."
Think of the connectors in your life, make a list and use it. In order to be creative, you need to start thinking of people outside of your usual contacts.
Are there associations or professional groups that you can access through your employer or area of professional expertise?
What hobbies or interests that you have where groups meet to discuss what is new and different and how they can help each other learn those new things?
What is your favorite non-profit group or charity? Is there a committee or board position available for you to be able to connect with others with same interests?
Are you taking classes at the local college or specialized school? If so, make an effort to get to know your classmates and exchange contact information to help each other for the future.
In my MBA courses, I encourage the students to keep in touch with each other during and after their graduate experience and to focus on building their network for the future.
Back to your favorite non-profit or charity. This connection can be the best way to build a network and creatively work with people that you might otherwise meet. If your can join a committee or non-profit board you will have the opportunity to meet with new people on a regular basis who share the same commitment and passion for the community that you do. These contacts will lead you to other contacts and to experiences that you will value for years to come.
Don't have a favorite non-profit or charity right now? Call the 211 line in Salt Lake City and they will gladly put you in touch with an organization that needs your help. I know, you are very busy, and don't have time for anything other than work or family... Many of these organizations meet during the day and most employers encourage their people to get out and serve the community in which they live, often during working hours. Check it out and I am certain you will find that to be case.
Let's recap: creative networking gives your the opportunity to meet new people, perhaps improve your knowledge or skills in your area of expertise, and give back the community in which you live - and give you the added advantage of building relationships that can help you and allow your to help others in the future.
What are you waiting for?
