Remember we talked about the need to build an effective network for success in your job search? This network will not only be important to you now, but also in the future as you plot your career path going forward. No matter what stage you find your self in your career, a network is the key to continued success.
Salt Lake is a very relationship driven community, people here like to be connected. Here, a good network can mean the difference between achieving your goals or settling for something you really don't want in terms of your next job opportunity.
I know it isn't always fair, but often positions are aware based upon who you know and who you are connected to rather than a defined process that yields the best qualified candidate.
But let's face it, a person who isn't qualified hopefully won't get very far even if they are well connected, so it is always wise to apply for positions for which you are qualified. Focus your search, don't just throw darts.
So how does one go about building a good network? Talk to people. Make a list of all the people with whom you associate on a regular basis and start contacting them. Keep an accurate record of your contacts including their contact information and when you last spoke with them, at some point you will need to follow up.
If you have outplacement benefits, use them to the fullest. Get to know the people who are in the training and networking meetings with you. Find out where they have worked and who they know, they may be able to help you create a connection that you don't already have.
So what if you have already done this and you still haven't been able to land the position you really want. You need to start getting creative. Stay tuned, we will talk about creativity in networking.
