Advice for navigating a job search - focus on you
Navigating your job search in Salt Lake City can be as challenging as any other city - but for different reasons.
The good news is our unemployment is lower than the national average, 5.4% in May compared to a national average of 9.4%. The bad news is that there are not as many options in terms of corporate entities in the Salt Lake area compared to other cities; don't let that stop you.
Rather than focusing on what everyone else is doing or thinking, focus on yourself. Here are a few tips for moving your search forward:
- If you have been offered outplacement assistance by your former employer take advantage of it - you don't know as much as they do and they can provide valuable resources for you moving forward.
- Don't be embarrased. There are many reasons for the changes in the economy that have caused you to be unemployed. Don't internalize it, stay positive and move forward.
- Start talking to people and making connections that will help you make contacts that you might not have.
- Follow up on referrals, even if they don't sound promising, you never know where they will lead you.
- Use a variety of sources, internet, personal contacts, newspapers, etc.
- Do whatever it takes to keep your attitude positive. Watch a funny movie, listen to your favorite music, keep in touch with friends; do whatever you need to do to stay positive - it will make a huge difference.
This is just starting point, we will talk later about creating a network and how to use it effectively, no matter what level of position you want - you need a network!
