If you are on facebook then you are familiar with profiles since your profile is what you create when you first create a facebook account. In many respects you could consider this your default page. However, another powerful feature of facebook is the fan pages. Many people are confused about how this work and about why you may want one or maybe even more than one.
Here are 21 reasons why you can benefit from them:
1. The content on a facebook fan page is indexed in the search engines. Unlike profiles your links and content on a page will be viewable and findable by anyone who is searching.
2. You can have more than one fan page. Unlike profiles where you can only have one profile per person, there is not a limit as to the number of fan pages you can have, however, you cannot create fake pages for other people or businesses.
3. Fan pages allow you to separate your personal life from your business life. You can use a fan page to post a lot of content that is not necessarily of interest to all of your friends.
4. A fan page can be used as a more powerful list building tool with your opt-in box. Although you can put one on your profile, many people find that the opt-in rate is higher with fan pages.
5. Since it is public, people do not have to ask for permission to be your fan. This enables a larger audience to connect with you.
6. You can add videos, text, events and other applications directly on your fan page and promote yourself and your business with them.
7. You can create a unique facebook fan page url for every page that has more than 1,000 fans making it easier for people to remember the page.
8. You can promote your page via Twitter and people can see it even if they are not registered with facebook.
9. You can link to your facebook fan page on your blog, and website and get new fans without going through the process of them having to request you as a friend.
10. Your fan page updates will still show up in the news feed on facebook for any of your fans just like your updates to your profile status.
11. There are additional applications you can install on your fan page that you cannot put on your profile. Many of these are more business related.
12. If you choose the right keywords, you can increase your rank in the search engines with a fan page.
13. You can automatically import your blog RSS feeds onto your fan page to give new content regularly and to save you time.
14. You can create a fan page for a business, website or product. This is not allowed with facebook profiles.
15. You can create an anonymous fan page for something where the fans cannot tell who created the page. In some cases this may be a good thing such as with fan pages for your work or job.
16. Unlike your friend profile where people can send you lots of invites for applications that can clog up your account, they cannot do this with fan pages.
17. Other fans can upload their photos and videos to your page, if you let them. This can create more of a sense of community than with a profile where this is not possible.
18. You can include a discussion board on your page just like a mini forum and your fans can interact with you and the other fans right there.
19. You can allow your fans to post reviews on your fan page and give you feedback.
20. Someone can be both a fan and a friend if they want to. For some people this may increase the relationship you are able to build with them.
21. Your fan page can be an extention of you or of your business and can permit you to market even more of yourself.
