News and notes around the Colorado golf scene:
HIGH SCHOOLS: Highlands Ranch junior Caleb Barker captured the individual
title Tuesday in the Colorado Class 5A boys golf tournament at Saddle Rock Golf
Course. Barker shot a 1-over-par 73 at the Aurora course to finish with a two-day
total of 1-under 143 to capture the first state title for Highlands Ranch. Barker's
efforts weren't enough as Highlands Ranch finished fifth. Douglas County repeated
as the 5A champion with a 457, led by individual runner-up Cody Kent (148).
Regis was two shots back of Douglas County at 459; Mountain Range was third
(461) and Dakota Ridge was fourth (467).
In Class 4A, Wyndham Clark, a Valor Christian sophomore, shot a final-round 5-
under 67 to rally to win medalist honors. Clark earned the first state title for the
two-year Highlands Ranch school coming from three shots back of first-round
leader Drew Trujillo of Montrose to win the 4A crown. Trujillo shot a final-day 72 and finished two shots back. Playing on the Highland Ranch Golf Club course, Clark led his school to the state title as well. Valor Christian finished with a 429, six shots ahead of Rock Canyon (435) and 19 in front of Montrose and D'Evelyn (448).
Class 3A: Peter Hassan of Alexander shot a two-day total of 155 to win medalist
honors and Kent Denver won its fourth straight team title at Cougar Canyon Golf
Club in Trinidad.
COLLEGES: Colorado State University finished fourth and Colorado was sixth in the
Heather Farr Memorial women's tournament Tuesday at Colorado National Golf
Club in Erie. Texas Tech shot a three-round total of 882 to win the tournament on
CU's home course. Tech's Alex Gibson shot a 3-under 213 to earn medalist
honors, five shots better than CSU's Kasey Claussen. Emily Talley was CU's low
scorer at 223.
On the men's side, CU finished 11th at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Gridiron
Classic with a two-day score of 895. Playing on its home Warren Golf Course in
South Bend, Ind., the Irish won the tournament with an 870. Justin Bardgett led
the Buffs with a 6-over 216, good for fifth place.
