Let's see: it's mid-summer. Families everywhere are watching their dimes and dollars. The little natives on vacation from school are probably getting restless. And the daily lament that "there's nothing to do" has probably begun. But, there's a remedy for all of the above, for at least one night, as Alameda's Crab Cove will again be the venue for music and end-of-the-week fun with the second of three summer Concerts at the Cove July 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This concert is presented by the West Alameda Business Association and the East Bay Regional Park District, in celebration of its 75th anniversary, and is sponsored by local radio station KOIT.
Spend the afternoon packing a picnic dinner, and gather some lawn chairs or blankets to lie on, along with some warm layers of clothing, just in case the fog rolls in. Then prepare for some retro rock and roll by Notorious, a six-member band that performs a repertoire of hits from the likes of the Commodores, AC/DC and Madonna, to name but a few. Some concert-goers might even feel the urge to dance.
It's an evening tailor-made for families. If the picnic plan doesn't grab you, there are food vendors from many Webster Street businesses (www.westalamedabusiness.com) and premium wine and beers from R&B Cellars and Alameda's own Fireside Lounge. No outside alcohol is allowed.
With the concert venue located in front of the Crab Cove Visitors Center, youngsters and their grown-ups are invited to take advantage of the activities and nature crafts offered by Crab Cove staff.
All activities and, of course the music, are free, as is the parking at Robert Crown Memorial State Beach and in parking lots at Webster Street and Taylor and Santa Clara avenues. For families who travel light, free valet bicycle parking is offered by BikeAlameda.
