Tigers release Thames, Treanor
The 2009 season is over, the tears shed from the disappointment of the 29 other teams, like the celebratory champagne in New York is now dry-- and the champion Yankees have had their parade.
While play on the field has halted until 2010, the off-season has brought with it immediate change and immediate impact here in Detroit as the Tigers' began their roster shakeup looking ahead to next season.
The organization announced Friday that outfielder
Marcus Thames and back up catcher
Matt Treanor are being removed from the roster and will not be offered a contract for 2010.
The 32-year-old Thames never materialized into the run producing designated hitter the Tigers were hoping he would in 2009. Thames hit just .252 with 13 home runs and 36 RBI over 87 games.Thames finished the season with just one home run nine RBI over his last 30 games.
Thames leaves town having played his last six seasons in Detroit, having hit 99 of his 101 career home runs in a Tiger uniform
Treanor, 33, was brought in prior to the '09 season to serve as the team's backup catcher to starter
Gerald Laird. Instead, a nagging hip injury ended his season in April after only four games. The emergence of
Alex Avila makes Treanor expendable.
The organization also announced the contract of infielder
Michael Hollimon has been outrighted to Triple-A Toledo. Hollimon appeared in 29 games at Double-A Erie, before being recalled to the Tigers and being immediately placed on the 60-day DL Sept. 1.
Hollimon hit .212 with three home runs and 21 RBI over 29 games with the SeaWolves.
Right-handed pitcher
Joel Zumaya and infielder
Jeff Larish were both reinstated from the 60-day disabled list.
