Tiger centerfielder Curtis Granderson's All-Star season got a little more rewarding Friday.
Granderson was named the Marvin Miller Man of the year Friday, an award presented by the Major League Baseball Players Association.
The announcement Friday that Granderson had won the award--along with St. Louis Cardinal first baseman Albert Pujols--who won for player of the year, came on ESPN Radio's "Mike and Mike in the Morning" show.
"To take the ability that the fans love you and look up to you and use that to try to do different things in your respective cities is definitely an honor," Granderson said on the ESPN radio show Friday morning. "The fact that other teammates and other players throughout the league have acknowledged that as well has definitely been a great thing too."
Granderson helped found The Grand Kids Foundation in 2008, which is aimed to "enforce education initiatives to youth and help bring the sport of baseball back to the nation's inner-cities." Granderson also works with the Detroit Tigers Foundation and Detroit's Action Team as well as other various programs in Detroit and its surrounding areas.
"Baseball players out there, of course we have abilities to do things that a lot of people can't, and financially that's one of the things," Granderson said. "You don't necessarily have to have money to go out there and help other people and that's what the Action Team's trying to do. You don't have to be rich or be a famous athlete to go out and have a big impact "
The Marvin Miller Man of the Year award is named after the founding executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association and is awarded to the player whose on and off-the-field performance most inspires others. The award was voted on by other major leaguers last month.
