After playing over half the season with nagging knee pain, Brandon Inge is scheduled to have surgery to address patellar tendinitis in both knees, the Tigers announced Thursday. Despite the injuries, Inge started 157 games for the Tigers—appearing in a total of 161 of the Tigers’ 163 games.
Inge told reporters in late June that he injured the knee in the series against the Chicago Cubs. Inge finished the first half of the season hitting .268 with 21 home runs and 58 RBI. Inge struggled enormously in the second half, due largely in part of continuing to play in a pair of injured knees.
Inge refused to go on the DL unless he could be guaranteed health in no more than 15 days. Remaining in the lineup, his offensive numbers plummeted.
After an All-Star worthy first half, Inge hit just .186 with six home runs and 26 RBI after the break. Inge struck out a team-high 170 times this season. Inge finished 2009 hitting .230 with 27 home runs and 84 RBI.
The procedure is scheduled for Nov. 3 and is to be performed by Dr. Stephen Lemos at the Detroit Medical Center. Inge is expected to make a full recovery and should be able to return at the start of Spring Training in February.
