June 6 was to be the day to signup for a two-year commitment to Sprint. June 6 was to be mark the end of the beginning of the long anticipated Palm Pre, winner of the coveted “Best in Show” of the Consumer Electronic Show in January.
Adding to the excitement of the morning pursuit of the Pre was the filled parking lot at the Sprint store in Union, New Jersey. Traffic poured onto the very busy (even on a Saturday morning) Route 22 thoroughfare. The backup meant a ten-mile drive but hey, we are talking about the Pre! So why not?
Arriving at the second Sprint store and seeing the Pre, at long last, on display was exciting.
So you can imagine the disappointment of finally picking it up and playing with the Pre. The Palm Pre, feeling lighter and smaller than its Palm Pilot predecessor is very difficult to read. The Palm Pre looks very similar to its HTC model cousin, the Samsung D880 DuoS and the HTC Touch from a couple of years go. Except the Palm Pre boasts an updated operating system, crisp graphics and about six office-related core apps; not too much to get excited about.
The Sprint store rep, accompanied by a retail boxed unit by her side for quick sale, demonstrated Palm Pre’s operating system clever card flipping and tossing up, down and sidewise. Still. Why?
While impressive, it made one who waited before buying the iPhone wonder….What was the 5-month wait all about anyway? Time to buy the iPhone 3Gs!
